Junior Debating League Finals

Dear audience, honourable judges and respected opponents…

This is how the Grand Final was opened by side proposition that took place in Heidelberg from the 4th to the 6th July 2025. The event was the result of a one-year-long journey. Though we did not make it into the finals of competition, this weekend was the highlight of a very successful year for us.

After having won 4 of 6 debates this year, we were unsure about getting into the finals. But soon it turned out that we were among the 12 best debating teams of southern Germany.

Accompanied by COACH WEYMANN, six of us went to participate in the finals, which consisted of two prepared and one impromptu debate, the latter with just one hour of spontaneous preparation time before the start.

After our arrival at the hostel in Heidelberg, we settled into our rooms and started to prepare for the first debate. Following a great performance from the team, we managed to take the win. We then had dinner and went back to our rooms to prepare for the next day and get some rest. On the following day, we ate breakfast and afterwards the motion for the impromptu debate was announced: “This house believes that everyone should go on vacation in the country they live in”. As expected, after an hour of preparation, we once again won, this time against team Plochingen. Before round three of the debates, we prepared once more. After a fierce battle against team Königin-Olga-Stift – the later winners of this year’s league – we unfortunately lost the third round and weren’t able to advance onto the semi-finals. Better luck next year! 😉

Nevertheless, we managed to rank 5th out of the 34 teams that participated in this year’s championship.

At the end, our team would like to give thanks to everyone who allowed us to debate during this year and the finals. Especially to the Verein der Freunde and of course to COACH WEYMANN 😎 for being the 🐐!

If you want to be a part of our school’s debating club, report to Ms Weymann at any time.
